This was the start of my Karate career “on and off” period in secret because my parents refused me permission to be involved in this “dangerous sport”.

1978 – 1982 :   Cape Town Karate-Do – Hugh St John Thompson. Dennis St John Thompson

Instructor : Sensei Johan Roux

Took part in International Championships achieving good results at Kata.  Also involved in numerous training camps at Stilbaai conducted.

Graded Shodan.

1981 – 1985 :    Cape Town Goju Kan – Tommy Wright, Chris Ferndale (deceased)

Founder member of Goju Kan.  This School later produced students of high standard who became actively involved in Western Cape and SA Karate.

Confirmed Shodan

1991 – 2002 : Karate Zen SA : Johan Roux

Instructor : Johan Roux, Nellie Kleinschmidt

  • Became one of the Senior Instructors/Regional Chief Instructor.
  • Produced numerous champions at Style and All Styles level.
  • Founder member of Karate Zen Boland.
  • Accompanied the Karate Zen SA Team to New Zealand as Chief Referee.
  • During this time, attended seminars conducted by Dennis May in Auckland New Zealand,
  • Vice President of Karate Zen SA.
  • Graded : Confirmed Shodan, Nidan, Sandan.
  • Awarded KASA 2000 Honorary Sandan

2004 – 2006 : International Kenshi-Kai : Karate Kobudo Organisation : Shihan Imtiaz Abdulla (International Chief  Tetsuhiro Hokama)

  • Attended numerous training camps. Eg. Soke Kozo Kuniba (Japan Osaka Kuniba Kai International)
  • Referee Course Jhb – Hisataka Sensei Koshiki Karate
  • Confirmed Sandan
  • Graded Yondan

2007 : Goju Ryu Karate-Do Kuyu Kai International : Saiko Shihan Osamu Hirano

  • With and under the leadership of Shihan SA, launched Nihon Goju Ryu Karate-Do Ku Yu Kai International in SA at Witbank
  • Took part in 4 day training camp with Osamu Hirano
  • Confirmed Yondan
  • Osamu Hirano visit Cape Town Dojos (October 2007)

March 2008

  • Attended Nihon Goju Ryu Karate-Do Ku Yu Kai International Champs in Belgium as Chief Referee, SA delegation.
  • One of my students crowned as Ku Yu Kai International Kata Champs
  • Took part in seminars/workshops with
    Aziz Ali Goju Ryu Ku Yu Kai - Belgium
    Richard de Haas- Netherlands
    Seigi Teramura – Japan
  • Conducted classes for the disabled
  • Member of the International Grading Panel.

  • Former Boland President – 2001 to 2007
  • Honorary Life President Karate Boland
  • Played a major role in achieving unity in Boland Karate
  • Honorary Life Member of the Boland Sports Council

  • Former Vice President KASA

  • Played a major role in attempts to get unity in SA Karate (negotiated with SASCOC in this regard)
